Electrical Inspection & Testing

Electrical Inspection and testing falls into two main categories;

  • The electrical installation including all sockets, lighting, wiring, switching, consumer unit, earth bonding, etc. and
  • Appliances which connect to, or plug in to, the electrical system. This is more commonly known as Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Testing. For appliance testing follow this link to our PAT Testing page.

Testing & inspection of installations is necessary as they deteriorate with age. This is due to a number of factors such as damage, wear and tear, corrosion, excessive electrical loading and environmental influences.

It’s easy to take electricity for granted – just flick a switch and the power comes on. But electricity can also be an invisible danger that can cause shocks, severe burns, and death, as well as property damage from fires and explosions. In some cases, there is no warning of the danger to come. Fortunately, with a proper system of inspecting and testing, you can protect yourself and your property.

We offer two levels of electrical installation inspection: Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR), until 31.12.11 formerly known as Periodic Electrical Inspection,Test & Certification Report; and Routine Electrical Inspection

Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is comprehensive, detailed, and thorough. It is an industry standard – to BS7671, as required by the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE).

The routine electrical inspection is an intermediate version of the EICR. It contains some testing but is not as thorough as the EICR. Typically, it would be used in the intervening years between the EICR to monitor for deterioration, or where the fuller inspection was not felt necessary.

The main differences between the two inspections are the level of testing and the price. The routine inspection is approximately half the cost of the EICR. For more information, please see our Price List.

In conjunction with requirements from the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and Local Authorities, 1st Call Gas and Electric Ltd recommend the following inspection and testing timescale:

Flats & Houses

Routine Inspection: Annually
Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR): Every 5 years

HMOs & Bed Sits
